WCFW 2018 – Betsuni Nomi

2018 fall/winter Clothing line

I am so happy to announce that our first collection for Betsuni will be debuting at Western Canada Fashion Week on September 27, 2018!

This is Ames’ & my first original collection of Japanese Fashion inspired clothing collection consisting of a caped kimono, unique yukata, and colorful hakama style pants.

the story

After we finished a few costume commission pieces, Ames and I designed two Japanese Fashion inspired tops – the Inked wrapped crop top & the Butterfly Fanfare Yukata.

We popped them up on our website and poof! They were quickly purchased!

So, we decided to create a whole collection themed around something interesting and launch it at a fashion week to better gauge the interest for our work. That’s how Betsuni Nomi was born!

This collection has 12 outifts themed around beverages. We have teamed up with Spirit of the Wench to come up with drink recipes to match each outfit!

If you want to see the pieces before they debut at Fashion Week in Edmonton, visit here: Betsuni.

DREAMS COME TRUE
When I first stepped onto the fashion scene, all I ever wanted was to become a spokesmodel. So you can just imagine how speechless and stunned I was when Aman Dhalay asked me to be Javeda’s brand ambassador.

the story

by Aman Dhalay

Javeda is so special to me. I wanted to have someone representing Javeda that understands and lives fashion. I wanted someone who cherishes the roots of fashion from conception of the idea to the actual production of the outfit and loves that whole process as much as I do.

I first met Elle at one of my casting calls and chose her as one of my models for a runway show at a charity event.

I will never forget this: After that runway show, I asked her, “Elle why are you still here?” She was free to go home and I would have been fine with that, but she said, “I just don’t like people leaving a mess and extra work for the designer. We should all stay back and make sure everything is set back into place, which is the professional way to do things.”

That told me Elle is more than just a model. She doesn’t let all the glamour of fashion go to her head. At the end of day, she appreciates all the hard work that goes into an event and does what she can to add to that success, even if she doesn’t have to.

She’s amazing at what she does – her talents are quite extensive, which makes her an Everything Girl.

I feel that Elle is very humble, hardworking, and driven with a lot of passion. She has a real understanding of fashion – she lives it everyday. She knows what the fashion industry is all about and how to carry it professionally.

She designs. She creates. She puts in the time and effort to do everything professionally, and she does it just for the passion of it.

Elle is one of a kind. I’m really honored and proud to have her be part of Javeda, and excited for the journey we have ahead of us.

I absolutely love running amok in costume. It’s just one of the childhood games that I will never outgrow. Eventually, I started receiving commissions for costumes from other cosplaying fans.

At first, the idea of hand engraving sentimental items really made me anxious. If I made a mistake, this beautiful item would be scarred forever!

I learned to take extra precautions to avoid such mishaps and to develop a confidence in my skills that helped calm my shaking hands.

I have always loved carnival cotton candy – it was a have-to buy whenever I drop by the Calgary Stampede. So, it absolutely delighted me when a client asked me if it was a service that I could provide through Latte Art Love.

Betsuni

Betsuni

Fashion Design has always fascinated me and I dabbled in the craft as early as eight years old. So you can imagined how excited I was when Ames Hagon agreed to launch a Fashion brand with me – betsuni, Japanese Fusion clothing & accessories.

betsuni

the story

I’m sorry. There is no magical story behind betsuni. betsuni doesn’t have a love story. betsuni is the result of two friends who loved creating things. People ended up wanting to buy the things, so the two friends created a business name to sell the things under. An official business name made it easier to group the creations together and also … it sounded cool.

I have been working with Ames Hagon for a few years on various projects from blogging to event networking to sewing. We worked really well together – our skills complement each other, we are honest to each other, and we share the same work ethic. So when we started creating random things together and then began selling these things, it was just natural to work all our projects into a business format. I didn’t have to perform a song and dance to convince Ames – Ames and I just shared all we had to get the business going in the right direction. Everything just flowed easily and naturally into place.

Ames and I are huge fans of Haute Couture Fashion so we incorporate as much of these elements into our collections. We draw our own concepts, draft our own clothing patterns, spend hours searching for the right fabrics, and meticulously sew all the pieces together to create a beautiful garment that we find difficult to part with.

beaux-arts studio was previously known and operated as Wed Studio under the care of Juliana Williams. Wed Studio offered opportunities to entrepreneurs to develop and grow their businesses and work together to provide a wonderful collection of products and services for a wedding. Eventually, I took over Wed Studio and expanded our products and services beyond the wedding industry.

the story

As an entrepreneur, I absolutely love the concept of Wed Studio. By participating in a co-share work space, all members are able to reduce their business costs and work in a professional and elegant boutique studio on independent and collaborative projects.

So, I joined Wed Studio in 2013 with Latte Art Love a studio member as a way into the wedding industry. I hosted tasting events for bridal parties and collaborated with other members on boutique events and photo shoots.

In 2015, I took ownership of Wed Studio and when we expanded our products and services beyond that of the wedding industry, I renamed Wed Studio to beaux-arts studio – a members only collaborative space of Fine Arts.

That special something

Juliana & Aman (our Studio Manager) did a wonderful job at turning a dark, out-of-date, and tiny law office into a bright, creativity inspiring boutique studio that matched the high quality of the products & services of our members.

I continued with this idea and added additional amenities, like a mini photo studio, sewing room, and event supplies, so our members can easily move from client meetings to work space to product photography to pop up gallery. It really is an all-in-one space for a well-rounded entrepreneur.

Latte Art Love

Latte Art Love is my first passion  –  it is more than just the conventional coffee shop. Latte Art Love specializes in bringing that beloved Coffee Culture to any special event by providing espresso bar services right on location.

the story

I had the idea of some sort of Italian Coffee delivery service for a few years before I launched Latte Art Love, but the logistics for such a concept at the time didn’t jam with my ideals of great coffee. It wasn’t until my husband and I traveled to Vienna, Austria that the idea of a mobile coffee shop began to materialize into reality.

Coffee Culture in Vienna was so different from what Culture Culture was like in Calgary of 2013. Coffee tasted insanely delicious; fresh Italian Coffee was available on site at our conference at nearly every vendor booth, and coffee drinkers there had a more sophisticated and appreciative palate for great Italian styled coffee.

Somehow, vendors were able to bring in and grow local Coffee Culture temporarily in our working life at our conference via mobile espresso bar systems. This was what I wanted to bring back to Calgary.

Once I got back home, I obsessed over the idea of a mobile espresso bar service. Yes, a conventional cafe may have been a tried and true food service concept, but the mobility and bringing/sharing Coffee Culture in unconventional locations attracted me more.

I am so grateful for my Engineer, Yeats Wong. I planned out the equipment and general dimensions of our mobile espresso bar system, but it was Yeats who made sure the system was structurally sounds and built specifically for my abilities and needs. We are currently on our third prototype and we continue to modify and improve the Latte Art Love espresso bar, so we can share our passion of Coffee Culture.

Latte Art Love

We wouldn’t have been able to test out and fix up any kinks in the concept without Maria & Shannon Hoover, who gave us a venue to kickstart our business. We first opened in June of 2014 at Endeavor Art Gallery & Event Space, which was run by the Hoovers, and developed and built our coffee box system there. We have grown from our tiny cafe to a full espresso bar service, now located at the ATB Entrepreneur Centre on the RED mile (17 Avenue SW).

That special something

I have brought my espresso bar system to so many special events, but fresh Italian coffee isn’t the only thing that attracts my clients. Latte Art Love is all about our love for latte art, of course!

Most of our R&D time was actually spent on developing better techniques for sharing our Latte Art and making Latte Art more feasible to create at off-site venues for bigger crowds.

Did you know?
I am actually the barista behind the Crypt Cafe monster videos! I was flown down to Hollywood to create latte art for the CryptTV team and Eli Roth, himself!
